Training Eric Tielkes studied tropical agriculture at the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands; 1982-1988). He specialised in crop-livestock interactions in the tropics with an emphasis on extension science and holds a doctoral degree in agricultural sciences from the University of Hohenheim (1995).
Career Eric Tielkes was coordinator of the EU funded research project CEE-ST2 "Defoliation du petit mil” in Mali (1990-1993), agro-pastoralist in the development project “Développement rural de Tahoua/Niger (GTZ – KfW, DED)” (1995-1998), coordinator for rural development at the German Development Service (DED) in Niger (1998-2001), scientist at the Centre for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics at the University of Hohenheim (2001-2006). Since August 2006, he is working as househusband and free consultant.
Since 2008 he is part-time contracted by DITSL to organise the Tropentag conference, the annual “International Conference on Research for Development in Agriculture and Forestry, Food and Natural Resource Management” – Tropentag“. He supports the local organisation committees and is responsible for the internet-based submission and acceptance procedure for papers and is editor of the book-of abstracts.
Experience abroad Eric Tielkes has gained long-term research and development work experience in Mali (~ 3 years) and Niger (~ 6 years) and short-term experience in Chad and Oman.
Research and Development work

His main interest is on the interactions between livestock and crop production and especially on the communal management of pastures and other feed resources. On this issue, he organised two regional workshops (2000 and 2004) in Niamey/Niger.
